Prosodic phrasing in korean, determine governor, and then split or not

چکیده
This paper introduces a prosodic phrasing method in Korean to improve the naturalness of speech synthesis, especially in textto-speech conversion. In prosodic phrasing, it is necessary to understand the structure of a sentence through a language processing procedure, such as POS tagging and parsing, since syntactic structure correlates better with the prosodic structure of speech than with other factors. In this paper, the prosodic phrasing procedure is treated from two perspectives: dependency parsing and prosodic phrasing using dependency relations. This is appropriate for Ural-Altaic, since a prosodic boundary in speech usually concurs with a governor of dependency relation. From experimental results, using the proposed method achieved 12% improvement in prosody boundary prediction accuracy with a speech corpus consisting 300 sentences uttered by 3 speakers.

The Role of Pitch Range Reset in Korean Sentence Processing
This study investigates the effect of pitch range reset in Korean listeners’ processing of syntactically ambiguous participle structures. Unlike Japanese and English,in Korean, the downtrend or the reset of pitch range does not consistently differentiate Accentual Phrases (AP), a lower level of phrasing, from Intonational Phrases (IP), a higher level of phrasing. Therefore, we explore Korean li...
متن کاملA prosodic phrasing model for a Korean text-to-speech synthesis system
This paper presents a prosodic phrasing model for Korean to be used in a textto-speech synthesis (TTS) system. Read text corpora were morpho-syntactically parsed and prosodically labeled following the Penn Korean Treebank [Han et al., 2002] and K-ToBI prosodic labeling conventions [Sun-Ah, 2000] respectively. Decision trees were trained with morpho-syntactic and textual distance features to pre...
متن کاملThe effect of phrase length and speech rate on prosodic phrasing
This paper presents the effect of phrase length and speech rate on prosodic phrasing in Korean. A passage consisting of 188 words was modified to include 220 words without affecting the meaning. Fourteen Korean speakers read the passage at normal and fast rates. Results show that the Korean AP includes 5 or fewer syllables at normal rate, but can include up to 7 syllables at fast rate. However,...
متن کاملDefault phrasing and attachment preference in Korean
This paper tests the validity of the Implicit Prosody Hypothesis (IPH) (Fodor 1998, 2002) based on production and perception experiments on Korean data. IPH states that attachment of a relative clause (RC) in a sentence with a complex noun phrase is influenced by a default prosodic contour of the structure projected in silent reading. It predicts that speakers of a language who prefer high atta...
متن کاملProcessing advantages for focused words in Korean
In Korean, focus is expressed in accentual phrasing. To ascertain whether words focused in this manner enjoy a processing advantage analogous to that conferred by focus as expressed in, e.g., English and Dutch, we devised sentences with target words in one of four conditions: prosodic focus, syntactic focus, prosodic + syntactic focus, and no focus as a control. 32 native speakers of Korean lis...
